Importance of team building to a company

    Team building, revolving around a wide range of activities, arose from the intention of enhancing team performance. The emphasis on team building has been increasing due to the growing importance of group-based structures with the current business pattern. This is whereby teamwork is deemed to encourage productivity, improve quality of the services, as well as the overall profitability (Tinuke, 2013). Such improvements are recognized by most businesses -- businesses’ successes are dependent upon all employees. Given such, team building, highlighting the specialization in bringing the best in a team to attain self-development, leadership skills, positive communication, as well as the capability to work closely with colleagues, is important for a workplace organization.

    With the acquisition of a great team-building skills, employees would be more focused on a common goal. This is associated with increased productivity. In contrary, if employees were to work individually, they are bounded by limited capacity; whilst group work eventually develops into a cohesive component (Robbins, 1998). These are generated together with trust, upon sharing and supporting one another with the assigned group task -- the bigger picture is often the most influential driver of actions.

In accordance to Fajana (2002), team building courses revolve around 2 basic skills:

  1. The identification of the correct problem
  2. Accounting them in an applicable manner

As stated by Tinuke (2013), these skills can be teased apart with the different nature and size of the team:

  1. With a constitution of team that is constantly change, emphasis would have to be placed on the individual development.
  2. For a group membership with comparatively static members, the enhancement of group relationship is to be highlighted.

    Together, the whole objective of team building is to attain the collective wisdom through interactive discussion with individual contributions, through negotiation and compromisation. Having the incorporation of a collaborative work culture, these would be reflected in an unbiased discussion, hence, resulting in the best outcome and priorities of the group as a whole Thompson and Luthans (2006).
